Campervan Hire in Reykjavik: the Golden Circle Without Overspending

Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss in 2-3 campervan days from Reykjavik: itinerary, mandatory campsites, Icelandic traps (wind, F-roads) and a realistic budget.

The Golden Circle is the ideal gateway to an Icelandic road trip: a 300 km loop from Reykjavik, three major sites, and a taste of everything the island does. In a campervan, allow 2 to 3 days to savour it — here is how, and at what price.

The itinerary: three sites, three moods

Þingvellir first (45 min from Reykjavik): the rift between the tectonic plates and the site of the world's oldest parliament. Then Geysir, where Strokkur erupts every 5 to 10 minutes. Finally Gullfoss, the two-tiered "golden falls". With an extra day, add the Kerið crater, the Friðheimar geothermal greenhouses and the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir. Drive early: between 8 and 10 am you will have Þingvellir almost to yourself, before the day-trip buses.

Wild camping: banned, no ambiguity

Iceland forbids sleeping in a vehicle outside campsites, except with the landowner's explicit permission. The rule is enforced and the fines are real. Good news: the Golden Circle campsites (Þingvellir, Laugarvatn, Flúðir, Selfoss) are plentiful, open June to September, and cost 1,800 to 2,500 ISK per person (€12-17). Our guide to camping rules in Europe details the Icelandic case.

The Icelandic traps

The budget, without illusions

Iceland runs 20 to 40% above continental Europe: campervans at €130 to €250 per day in summer, mini-campers at €90 to €150. Add fuel (€2-2.20/L), campsites and expensive groceries (stock up at the Bónus in Reykjavik before setting off). Three days for two: €600 to €950 all included.
