RV Rental in Houston: Space Center, Gulf Coast and Wide-Open Texas

America’s fourth-largest city, Houston is an underrated gateway to the United States: direct flights from Europe, well-established RV rental depots, and a coastal Texas unlike any other corner of the country — bayous, Gulf of Mexico beaches and the world’s greatest concentration of space history.
Renting an RV in Houston
The local fleet runs from compact campervans to big family Class Cs. What you only see here
Space Center Houston, the official visitor centre of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, justifies the stop on its own: a Saturn V lying full-length in its hangar, the historic Apollo mission control room, a shuttle mounted on its Boeing 747 carrier. Forty-five minutes south, Galveston lines up Victorian mansions and brown-sand beaches on its barrier island; to the north-east, the Big Thicket mixes swamps, pine forest and carnivorous plants in one of the country’s most biodiverse reserves.
Three Texan escapes

Texas, wintering ground
South Texas is one of the continent’s great wintering destinations: every year, tens of thousands of North American retirees — the “snowbirds” — head down to spend the cold months in their RVs, notably in the Rio Grande Valley. The phenomenon has been studied closely: in a comparative study published in 2005 in the Journal of Tourism Studies, Jenny Onyx and Rosemary Leonard show that these North American snowbirds, unlike Australia’s continuously roaming “grey nomads”, travel to a single destination and settle there for the season, recreating genuine communities on site (Google Scholar page). Rent an RV in Houston in winter and you’ll meet that America at every campground on the coast.
When to go — and the hurricane question
Houston’s winter is mild and dry: November to April is the ideal window, while Europe shivers.
