RV Rental in Salt Lake City: Yellowstone, Utah and the Rockies
Salt Lake City is the most central RV starting point in the American West: Yellowstone to the north, Utah’s Mighty 5 to the south — itineraries, seasons and budget.
On the map of the American West, Salt Lake City holds a position neither Las Vegas nor Denver can claim: five hours’ drive from Yellowstone to the north, four from Arches to the south, three and a half from Capitol Reef — it is the only starting point that lets you combine the Wyoming parks and Utah’s “Mighty 5” in a single loop without a wasted transfer day.
Why start here
The international airport is a major Western hub with direct flights from Europe in season, RV rental companies are well established (Cruise America and local operators, peer-to-peer platforms as backup), and pick-up prices generally run gentler than in Las Vegas or Los Angeles, both more touristic markets. The giant supermarket for the first evening’s provisioning is ten minutes from every depot — a detail that matters when you collect an 8-metre Class C in the late afternoon. Northern loop: Yellowstone and Grand Teton
The great classic is detailed in our Yellowstone from Salt Lake City itinerary: up via Bear Lake or Jackson, five nights in and around the park, back through Idaho. Book the park campgrounds the moment reservations open — that is the limiting factor, not the vehicle. The economics of that visitation have long been documented: the study by John Duffield, Chris Neher and David Patterson published in 2008 in the George Wright Forum put the annual spillover from watching Yellowstone’s reintroduced wolves at more than 35 million dollars for the park’s gateway communities (Google Scholar page) — when you wait in Lamar Valley with binoculars, you are part of that economy.
Southern loop: the Mighty 5 without Las Vegas
Heading south, the Arches–Canyonlands–Capitol Reef–Bryce–Zion sequence is traditionally driven from Las Vegas — our Mighty 5 from Las Vegas guide still applies in mirror image — but starting from Salt Lake City takes it the other way round and in the right order: Moab first (Arches and Canyonlands), then Scenic Byway 12 — one of the most beautiful roads in the United States —, Bryce and Zion as the finale, and back up Interstate 15. Allow a comfortable ten days. In high summer the canyons exceed 38°C: June and September–October are the true ideal windows, with Bryce’s altitude (2,400 m) staying cool regardless.
