Vienna, Budapest, Prague: the Three-Capital Motorhome Loop
The Vienna-Budapest-Prague motorhome loop: 1,000 km in 7-10 days, three vignettes to buy, city campsites, a complete budget and one-way advice.
Three imperial capitals, 1,000 km of easy roads, well-placed city campsites: the Vienna-Budapest-Prague loop is Central Europe’s classic road trip. It can be driven in 7 days at a brisk pace, comfortably in 10, and works year-round — with a special mention for the Christmas markets in December.
The itinerary in 7 days
- Days 1-2: Vienna — Schönbrunn, the Ring, an evening in a Heuriger wine tavern.
- Day 3: drive to Budapest (2.5 h) with an optional stop in Bratislava, which adds a fourth capital for a 30-minute detour.
- Days 4-5: Budapest — the Széchenyi baths, Buda, an evening along the illuminated Danube.
- Day 6: the Danube Bend (Szentendre, Visegrád, Esztergom), then north.
- Days 7-8: Prague via Brno — old town, Malá Strana, the castle.
- Days 9-10: back to Vienna through Moravian wine country (Mikulov) or Bohemian Paradise.
Three countries, three vignettes
This is THE quirk of the loop: each country requires its own electronic motorway vignette for vehicles under 3.5 t. Austria: about 12 € for 10 days. Hungary: a weekly e-vignette around 15 €. Czech Republic: about 11 € for 10 days. Slovakia if you route through Bratislava: about 12 €. That is 40-50 € in total, bought online before each border — gantries read your plate, no stopping required. Our fuel and tolls guide lists the amounts country by country.
Complete budget for two
A campervan from Vienna: 80-120 € per day in shoulder season, so 800-1,200 € for 10 days. Fuel: 1,000 km at 9-10 L/100 km, about 155 €. City campsites (Klosterneuburg in Vienna, Arena or Római in Budapest, Troja in Prague): 25-40 € per night, with direct bus or tram to the centres. Vignettes: 45 €. Total: 1,500-2,000 € excluding meals — in a region where restaurants and beer are still kind to the wallet.
One-way or loop?
A one-way Vienna-Prague is tempting, but drop-off fees often exceed 200-300 € with professional fleets, and the option barely exists peer-to-peer. The full loop remains the better deal.
