Campervan Hire in Bergen: Fjords and the Norwegian Coastal Route
Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, ferries and scenic routes: the campervan itinerary from Bergen, with a realistic budget, overnighting rules and season advice.
Bergen is Norway's best base for a campervan road trip: the city sits at the threshold of the western fjords, and the national scenic routes radiate in every direction. Here are the itinerary, the budget and the rules to know.
The classic itinerary: 7 to 10 days
From Bergen, head east to the Hardangerfjord and its orchards (2 h by road), then climb towards the Sognefjord — the country's longest — via the Stalheim road. Continue to Geiranger and its hairpins, and with 10 days push on to the famous Atlantic Road near Kristiansund, eight bridges strung between islets. Expect 1,200 to 1,500 km in total, ferries included: in Norway the ferry is part of the road — boarding is simple, with automatic number-plate payment on most crossings.
Allemansretten: generous but framed
The right to roam (allemansretten) allows overnighting in open nature provided you stay more than 150 m from dwellings and leave no trace — but it primarily concerns tents: in a campervan, stick to tolerated pitches, trailhead car parks and signed areas, and heed the local no-overnight signs, increasingly common at famous spots. Norwegian campsites (250-450 NOK, i.e. €22-40 a night) provide the indispensable hot showers. Our guide to wild camping rules in Europe covers the country-by-country nuances.
The budget, no bad surprises
Norway must be earned: expect 20 to 40% more than in France. A campervan rents for €95 to €190 per day in Bergen in summer, a mini-camper for €60 to €110. Add diesel (around €1.80-2/L), ferries (€10-30 per crossing with a campervan) and the automatic urban tolls. For a week as a couple: €1,400 to €2,200 all included. The line-by-line breakdown is in our fuel and tolls guide.
When to go
From June to August, endless days and open passes; September brings autumn colours and falling rates, with rapidly shortening days. Book 5 to 6 months ahead for July: the local fleet is small.
