Few big European cities have three national parks within two hours’ drive: from Manchester, the Peak District starts 45 minutes away, the Lake District an hour and a half, and the Welsh mountains two hours. The capital of the North is a seriously underrated road-trip base.
Renting in Manchester

The Peak District, Britain’s first park
Created in 1951, the Peak District is the United Kingdom’s first national park — the limestone dales of the White Peak to the south, the peat moors of the Dark Peak to the north, stone villages like Bakewell and Castleton, and the Chatsworth estate. By campervan it makes the perfect weekend: spectacular little roads (Snake Pass, the Edale valley), but narrow ones — staying under 6 metres is a real comfort.
Three itineraries from Manchester

Green that does you good, with evidence
Mancunians’ pull towards their parks is more than tradition: the study by Jules Pretty and colleagues at the University of Essex, published in 2005 in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research, showed that exercise taken in nature — « green exercise » — improves mood, self-esteem and blood pressure more than the same effort in an urban setting (Google Scholar page). A ridge walk on Kinder Scout straight from the van is the direct application.
Good to know
Wild overnight parking is frowned upon and often banned in the English and Welsh parks: farm campsites and private stopovers are the norm, best booked in summer.
