Real-world range: the question that actually matters

Charging on the road: how it actually works

On a standard AC charger (11 kW, the kind found at a campsite or a city car park), expect several hours: ideal for an overnight charge at an equipped stopover, far less practical mid-journey. Is it right for your trip?

Electric holds up well on a coastal or city-hopping itinerary with short, regular legs — a weekend around a big city, the Basque coast, or a loop of the Italian lakes, where chargers and stops line up naturally. It gets tougher on a big mountain road trip with long legs between stops — the Route des Grandes Alpes or a Norwegian fjord route — where elevation gain eats into range and rapid chargers thin out once you're off the main roads. Norway is actually the exception here: its charging network is one of the densest in Europe, which is exactly why the first electric campervan fleets are appearing there first.

Low-emission zones: the other good argument

Beyond fuel, going electric settles the low-emission zone question outright: no Crit'Air sticker, no ULEZ or Umweltzone check to plan around before entering a major European city. For a van with a lot of urban legs, that argument carries real weight — though on its own, it doesn't yet outweigh the charging logistics on an itinerary built around long daily distances.

Winter is the real test

Heating the cab and the living area draws straight from the traction battery, with no engine heat to recycle, and that knocks winter range down by 20 to 30 % compared with summer figures — the same effect seen on electric cars, just amplified here by the extra volume to heat. For a winter road trip, a diesel van is still the safer bet for now, or at least confirm the cold-weather range with the owner or operator before booking an electric model — that number rarely appears in the listing itself, but a quick message usually clears it up.

The rental price barely moves

Where it's offered, an electric van rents for roughly the same as an equivalent diesel one, sometimes a touch more on the newest models — the saving isn't on the rental rate but on fuel, noticeably cheaper per kilometre on electricity than diesel, provided you charge mostly off-peak or on standard chargers rather than rapid ones. On a one-week holiday with short legs the difference is modest; it adds up on a longer rental, by the week or the month.

Should you wait?

For now, an electric campervan is something you rent rather than something you default to — an option that exists on certain markets and certain models, not yet a filter offered across the board. For a first-time road trip, a classic diesel van is still the simpler choice; for a couple used to short legs and cities well covered by chargers, electric is already a serious option to compare at search time.
