The Basque coast by campervan: Biarritz to the green hinterland
Biarritz, Guéthary and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, then La Rhune, Espelette and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: the ideal Basque loop in a campervan, with honest parking advice.
Two hundred kilometres are enough to go from the waves of the Côte des Basques to the sheep pastures of La Rhune and the red-and-white façades of the Labourd villages. The French Basque country is the perfect condensed first road trip: short distances, scenery that changes every twenty minutes, and a genuine culture of hospitality.
The coast: Biarritz, Bidart, Guéthary, Saint-Jean-de-Luz
Starting from Biarritz, string together Bidart and Guéthary along the corniche road, then the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Let us be honest: in July and August overnight parking is tightly regulated here and height barriers guard most beach car parks. The method that works: campsites and motorhome stopovers slightly inland (Bidart and Urrugne have several), plus a bike or the bus to reach the water. Out of season, everything relaxes.
The hinterland is the real reward
This is where a campervan earns its keep. Ascain and the rack railway up La Rhune (905 m, the whole coastline at your feet), Sare and Ainhoa — two officially listed “most beautiful villages of France” —, Espelette with its garlands of peppers, then Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the foot of the passes. Roads are narrow but flowing; a van under 6 m is far happier here than a 7.5 m A-class.
Budget and season
- Campervan: €90-150/day in summer around Biarritz and Bayonne, €75-100 in May-June and September-October.
- Ideal duration: 4 to 5 days for the full loop, a week if you add the Aldudes valley or Hendaye.
- Best window: September — the water is still warm, the villages breathe again, prices drop 20-30%.
The one tip that changes everything
Book the vehicle early: the Basque country is one of the most requested stretches of the Atlantic coast by campervan, and the compact vans go first. Comparing Yescapa, Roadsurfer and the other platforms on identical dates, we regularly see 25% price gaps for equivalent vans out of Biarritz.
