Motorhome Rental in Nantes: Brittany, the Vendée and the Muscadet Vineyards

France’s sixth-largest city, former capital of the Dukes of Brittany and winner of the 2013 European Green Capital award, Nantes has a rare quality for a campervan road trip: four radically different directions open up from the very same city, none of them more than an hour and a half away. Ocean, salt marshes, vineyards and Loire Valley castles all share the same starting point here.
Renting in Nantes: where and for how much
Backed by Nantes-Atlantique international airport and its crossroads position facing the ocean, the city has a dense rental market: professional operators based on the outskirts, often near the airport in Bouguenais, and a wide choice of private owners through Yescapa and Goboony. Before hitting the road, a day in the Dukes’ city
Most rental companies suggest picking up the vehicle in late morning, leaving the afternoon free for the city before an early start the next day. The Château des ducs de Bretagne, a moated fortress right in the city centre, and its history museum trace eight centuries of the city; a short walk away, the Passage Pommeraye, a three-level 19th-century shopping arcade, is worth a look even without buying anything. On Île de Nantes, the former shipyard site, the Machines de l’île and their articulated Grand Éléphant still draw crowds of children and engineering enthusiasts alike. Parking a campervan for the visit is no trouble: several city-centre car parks accept large vehicles during the day.
Four directions from the Dukes’ city

The Muscadet vineyards, within easy reach
Less famous than its Loire Valley neighbours, the Muscadet vineyard (Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine AOC) stretches south-east of Nantes around Clisson — a small town rebuilt in the 19th century in an Italianate style that feels unexpected amid the surrounding countryside, and now also known for hosting the Hellfest festival every summer. A half-day round trip from Nantes, tastings with local winegrowers included, with an overnight stop possible at Clisson’s service area, rounds off a shorter ocean-side stay nicely without racking up the mileage.
When to go
Nantes’ oceanic climate allows for a long season: May to September for swimming and the Guérande salt marshes, with June and September offering a clear edge in terms of crowds and prices — coastal aires fill up by late afternoon at the height of summer. Further inland, toward Angers or the vineyards, early autumn (October) stays pleasant and much quieter, with the castles almost to yourself.
Why Nantes makes a good base for a first rental
Choosing a campervan over a conventional stay is not a trivial preference: a study by Rodrigues et al., published in 2025 in the journal Leisure Studies, shows that motorhome and vanlife travel meets all six criteria of Stebbins’ “serious leisure” — perseverance, career, effort, durable benefits, a distinctive ethos and identity — and delivers a form of eudaemonic well-being that is more lasting than a one-off leisure activity (Google Scholar page). In other words, it is less the destination that matters than the practice itself — and Nantes, with its range of short, very different getaways, is particularly well suited to stacking several experiences into just a few days, without the pressure of committing to a single grand itinerary.
Good to know
Along the Guérande and Vendée coastlines, check tide times before parking near channels and marshes: the aire network remains the simplest way to spend the night without surprises, and saves you hunting for a last-minute spot in high season. And if the urge to go further takes hold once you’re on the road, the Atlantic coast down to Biarritz connects naturally south of the Vendée, for anyone with a second week to spare.
