On the left, and to size
Left-hand driving is tamed in fifteen minutes of concentration (our first-time driving tips), but rural England adds its single-track roads with passing places, high hedges and medieval bridges with strict clearances. The golden rule of Cornwall and the Lakes: a 6-metre van goes everywhere, an 8-metre A-class picks its roads. And parking is planned everywhere — 2-metre height barriers are the sworn enemy of the English motorhomer.
London: ULEZ and the Congestion Charge
If your route touches Greater London, two schemes stack: the ULEZ (ultra-low emission zone, now covering all of Greater London) and the central Congestion Charge. Simplest of all: collect the vehicle on the outskirts and visit London without it. On tolls, England is frugal: the M6 Toll near Birmingham and a few bridge-tunnels (Dartford, billed by plate) are about it.
The night: campsites, CLs and pubs
Wild camping is not a right in England — nearly all land is private. The country makes up for it with a unique mesh: thousands of campsites, the Certificated Locations (five-pitch mini-sites on private land, a club institution), and pubs happy to host a van overnight in exchange for dinner — ask at the bar, and parking etiquette does the rest. Book school holidays and bank holidays without fail; they saturate Cornwall and the Lakes.
