Ireland is an obvious campervan destination: the Wild Atlantic Way — 2,500 signposted kilometres of coast —, landscapes that change with every shower, pubs to end the day and short distances that forgive everything. Driving on the left, without drama
A motorhome is easier to drive on the left than you might think: a high driving position, automatic gearboxes common, and a first fifteen minutes of concentration is enough to set the reflexes — our first-time driving tips apply doubly. The real difficulties lie elsewhere: narrow back roads lined with stone walls, hedges brushing the mirrors and sovereign sheep. Go compact if you are aiming for the peninsulas — a 6-metre van is happier there than an A-class.
The Wild Atlantic Way: the backbone
From Kinsale to Donegal, the Wild Atlantic Way is one of Europe’s finest coastal routes — and a research subject in its own right: the survey by Gerard Dunne, Emma Sprince and Kevin Griffin published in 2021 in Irish Geography, covering 341 tourism providers, documents the route’s broadly positive impact on the regions it crosses while flagging infrastructure limits (Google Scholar page). Practical: the M50, ferries and the invisible border
Three particularities. Dublin’s M50 ring road is tolled barrier-free, by number plate: pay online by 8pm the next day, or check that your rental company handles it — otherwise the fine follows the vehicle. Overnighting, weather and season
Wild camping is not a right in Ireland: the land is private, and the rule is a campsite or an aire — the network, sparser than in France, is completed by welcoming pub car parks, to be asked for politely at the bar (etiquette is everything). The season runs May to September: May–June brings the longest days and quietest roads, July–August the mildness and the crowds.
