The Netherlands is not the first country that comes to mind for a road trip — wrongly. It is compact, stitched together with cycle paths and camperplaatsen, and hides real variety: the Wadden Sea to the north, Zeeland to the south, flower fields in spring, museum cities all year. It is also, quite simply, one of the easiest countries in which to rent.
Where to rent: Amsterdam, Utrecht or Rotterdam
Amsterdam has the most visible supply (our guide to renting in Amsterdam covers depots and itineraries), but Utrecht, at the country’s geographic centre, is often the smarter starting point (dedicated guide), and Rotterdam puts you right beside Zeeland and its spectacular storm barriers.
The home of peer-to-peer rental

Camperplaatsen, campsites and the rules of the game
Wild camping is banned in the Netherlands, but the country makes up for it with a remarkable network of camperplaatsen — dedicated motorhome aires, often beside a harbour or a polder, gently priced — and some of the best-kept campsites in Europe. Practical: no tolls, but milieuzones
Good news: no tolls on Dutch motorways (two paying tunnels are the exception). In town, watch for milieuzones, environmental zones that exclude older diesels from several centres — most recent rental vehicles pass without trouble, but check with our guide to low-emission zones. The sea wind is non-negotiable: on dykes and long bridges, a tall van is driven with both hands (our strong-wind tips). And bring bikes: this is the country where a bike rack pays for itself faster than anywhere on earth.
When to go, and where to extend
Spring (April–May) is the trump card: tulip fields between Leiden and Haarlem, long days, still-quiet campsites. Summer heads for the Wadden islands and Friesland; autumn and winter are for the cities.
