VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
Renting from a private owner or a professional fleet?
Yescapa and Goboony on one side, Roadsurfer, McRent and Indie Campers on the other: price, equipment, flexibility — the real match-up.
Two worlds share the rental market: private owners (via Yescapa, Goboony) and professional fleets (Roadsurfer, Indie Campers, McRent). Neither is better in the absolute — two logics, to be chosen according to your trip.
The private owner: cheaper, better equipped, more human
Expect 15 to 30% less than a professional for the same category, especially off season. A privately owned vehicle comes lived-in and equipped: full crockery, levelling ramps, hook-up cable, cleaning products, often bedding and kids’ games — all items billed as extras elsewhere. And the handover lasts an hour with someone who knows the vehicle by heart and shares their favourite spots. The flip side: a single vehicle (a breakdown before departure can compromise the rental, even if platforms offer rebooking), less flexible dates, and variable wear — read the reviews; our Yescapa review explains how to decode them.
The professional: recent, standardised, flexible
A fleet under 2–3 years old, a polished departure process, integrated assistance, and above all services impossible with a private owner: one-way rentals between depots, departures from dozens of cities, flexible cancellation depending on the rate. In exchange: higher summer prices, kits (bedding, crockery, chairs) often billed at €30–90, and a brisker handover. Our Roadsurfer review details the model.
The verdict, trip by trip
Private owner: a loop from home, a tight budget, the wish for a fully equipped vehicle. Professional: one-way itineraries, a fly-and-drive departure abroad, cancellation flexibility, or a big recent vehicle in high season. On Van-Comparator, both worlds appear side by side for the same dates: exactly the screen you need to decide.
