Campervan Hire in Tromsø: On to the Lofoten and Senja

Midnight sun, Senja, Vesterålen and the Lofoten: the campervan itinerary from Tromsø, with real distances, local overnighting rules and a far-north budget.

Renting a campervan in Tromsø means starting the road trip already above the Arctic Circle: midnight sun from late May to late July, mountains plunging into the fjords, and the Lofoten road unrolling its bridges to the south-west. One of Europe's finest itineraries — provided you respect the distances and the local rules.

The itinerary: Tromsø, Senja, Vesterålen, Lofoten

Do not race straight to the Lofoten: Senja island, 3 h from Tromsø, offers comparable scenery without the crowds — its west-coast scenic route is Norway in concentrate. Continue through the Vesterålen (bird cliffs, quiet villages) then enter the Lofoten at Fiskebøl. From Svolvær to Å, every kilometre of the E10 deserves a stop: Henningsvær, Nusfjord, Reine, Hamnøy. Expect 900 to 1,100 km and 8 to 10 days for the full loop, ferries included.

Overnighting: the end of the Wild West

The right to roam applies here as everywhere in Norway, but the Lofoten, victims of their own success, have tightened vehicle overnighting hard: several municipalities ban night parking outside dedicated pitches, with signs and summer patrols. The right reflex: alternate official areas, tolerated car parks listed by the tourist offices, and campsites (250-450 NOK, €22-40 a night) — at 68° north the hot shower is no luxury anyway. Our guide to wild camping rules covers each country.

Budget and vehicle

In Tromsø the fleet is small and the season short: campervans at €100 to €190 per day in summer, mini-campers from €65. Book 6 months ahead for July. Diesel hovers around €1.80-2/L, and ferry crossings add €30 to €60 over the loop. A week for two comes to €1,500-2,300 all in — that is the price of the far north, and it earns every euro.
