Renting a Motorhome as a Young Driver: Age Limits, Surcharges, and How to Avoid Them

Twenty-two years old, licence in hand for three years, and itching to rent a van for the summer: on paper, nothing stops you. In practice, driver age is one of the factors that weighs most heavily on a motorhome booking — sometimes more than the vehicle itself. Here is what “young driver” actually means to rental companies, what it really costs, and how to keep the bill down.
Why rental companies watch age so closely
This isn't arbitrary caution. Crash statistics show that collision risk is highest in the very first months of solo driving, then drops sharply as experience builds. A landmark study by Mayhew, Simpson and Pak, published in 2003 in Accident Analysis & Prevention (Google Scholar page), tracked newly licensed drivers and documented a sharp decline in collision rates over the first six months of solo driving — most of the excess risk is concentrated in that initial window. At the wheel of a vehicle two to three times longer and wider than a regular car, that experience gap is exactly why insurers and rental companies charge younger drivers more, in every country.
The real thresholds, company by company
There's no legal minimum age to rent a motorhome: every platform and every rental company sets its own terms, and they vary a lot depending on the business model. On peer-to-peer platforms (Yescapa, Goboony), the owner decides case by case: many accept drivers as young as 21 with 2 years of licence for a campervan or converted van, and are a bit more cautious with A-class and alcove motorhomes, which are longer and harder to manoeuvre. On professional fleets (Roadsurfer, Indie Campers, McRent), the posted threshold is almost always 21, with an automatic surcharge up to age 24 or 25, and sometimes a higher floor of 23-25 for the largest rigs (A-class, alcove). How much the young-driver surcharge actually costs
In Europe, budget roughly €5 to €25 a day in extra fees for drivers aged 21 to 24, sometimes bundled into a “young driver” package that also raises the excess in case of damage. In the US, the gap is wider: some companies charge $20 to $35 a day for 21-to-24-year-olds. How to reduce or avoid the surcharge
- Add a more experienced second driver to the contract: often free or cheap on peer-to-peer platforms, they can take the wheel on the stretches that feel daunting (mountains, night driving on the motorway) without pushing up the total cost.
- Choose a campervan or converted van over an A-class: smaller vehicles are often accepted from age 21 with no surcharge on peer-to-peer platforms, where larger vehicles require 25.

Under 21: what's still possible
Below age 21, the pool of available rentals shrinks fast: only a handful of companies accept it, almost always for a mini-camper or a compact van, with a minimum of 2 years' licence and a raised excess. The most reliable option is to travel with an older relative or friend as the contract's main driver, taking turns once on the road within whatever the insurance allows — check that point before leaving, since an undeclared driver is never covered.
