Motorhome Rental Platform Fees, Explained

Service fees, preparation, cleaning, mileage packages, one-way charges: what platforms add to the advertised price, and how to compare the true total cost.

The price shown on a motorhome listing is almost never the price you pay. Between service fees, mileage packages and billed options, the final invoice can exceed the headline rate by 20 to 40%. Here is how each family of platforms builds its bill — and how to compare without getting caught out.

Peer-to-peer platforms: the service fee

On Yescapa or Goboony, the owner sets the daily rate; at payment time the platform adds a traveller service fee, which funds the included insurance, the assistance and the running of the site. Its amount varies with the platform, the duration and the vehicle — and only appears in full at the final summary. On top of that you will frequently find a mileage allowance (say 200 km per day, extra kilometres charged) and owner-set options: cleaning, bedding, baby gear.

Professional fleets: a bill built brick by brick

Roadsurfer, Indie Campers, McRent or Cruise America charge no "service fee" as such, but stack bricks instead: preparation or booking fees, capped mileage with a paid unlimited option, excess reduction at €10-30 per day, kitchen kit, bedding, second driver, young driver — and one-way fees if you return the vehicle elsewhere. In the United States these add-ons weigh especially heavy — our guide to renting an RV in the USA breaks them down.

The classic traps

The only rule that matters: the total price

Add up the daily rate, platform fees, your real planned mileage, the insurance level you choose and the options you actually need — then compare that total, and that total only. This is precisely what Van-Comparator does: one search, four platforms, the true final price side by side. To place each player before choosing, also read which rental platform to choose and how much an RV rental costs.
