Austria’s second city and the capital of Styria: where to rent a campervan in Graz, the motorway vignette, and three routes between vineyards, Alps and Slovenian lakes.
A UNESCO-listed old town, red rooftops watched over by the clock tower on the Schlossberg: Graz is Austria’s second city and the capital of Styria, which Austrians call the country’s « green heart ». For a road trip its position is a rare asset: vineyards to the south, Alps to the north-west and Slovenia less than an hour away.
Renting in Graz
The local offer is more compact than Vienna’s: a few professional operators on the outskirts plus private owners on the platforms. Always compare with Vienna, 200 km away: the choice is wider and the price difference sometimes pays for the detour. Austrian rates match Germany’s: €75 to €150 per day for a campervan (price guide).
The vignette, the first Austrian reflex
Austrian motorways and expressways require a vignette (physical or digital, valid one day, 10 days or 2 months) for vehicles up to 3.5 t. Austrian-registered rentals usually carry one — check the contract before heading for Slovenia… which has its own e-vignette too.
Three itineraries from Graz
- South Styrian wine road (2-3 days): an hour south, switchback vine-covered hills around Gamlitz and Ehrenhausen — an « Austrian Tuscany » of Buschenschänken (winegrowers’ taverns) and viewpoints.

- Next-door Slovenia (3-5 days): Maribor 70 km away, then Ljubljana and Lake Bled — one of the simplest cross-border combinations in Central Europe.
Outdoor summers that keep stretching
Austrian outdoor tourism is closely studied: the work coordinated by Ulrike Pröbstl-Haider (BOKU University, Vienna) for Austria’s special report on tourism and climate change, published in the Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, shows that warming is lengthening the seasons suited to summer and shoulder-season activities — hiking, cycling, water sports — while putting winter mountain tourism under strain (Google Scholar page). For campervan travellers, May-June and September-October are increasingly rewarding windows: golden vineyards, open passes and quiet stopovers.
Good to know
Wild camping is banned in nearly all Austrian Länder, Styria included: nights are spent on campsites or official stopover areas, plentiful around the thermal region of eastern Styria and the Riegersburg fortress.
