Motorhome Rental in Vienna: Wachau, Lakes and the Vignette
Rent a motorhome in Vienna: a 7-day itinerary through the Wachau, Salzkammergut and Lake Neusiedl, the Austrian vignette, campsites and parking rules.
Vienna is one of the best starting points in Central Europe: rental supply is real, motorways radiate in every direction, and in a single week you can string together the Wachau vineyards, the alpine lakes of the Salzkammergut and the Burgenland steppe without ever driving more than three hours at a stretch.
Renting in Vienna: prices and platforms
A campervan rents for 80-120 € per day in shoulder season, a family semi-integrated for 100-160 €, peaking at 180 € in August. Roadsurfer and Indie Campers have depots in the Vienna area; Yescapa and Goboony add privately owned vehicles, often better equipped. Van-Comparator compares all four in one search and shows the real total price — see also our guide on which rental platform to choose.
7-day itinerary from Vienna
- Day 1: pick-up, overnight at the Klosterneuburg campsite on the city’s doorstep.
- Day 2: the Wachau from Krems to Melk, terraced vineyards and a baroque abbey.
- Days 3-4: Salzkammergut — Hallstatt (mandatory parking outside the village), Lake Wolfgangsee.
- Day 5: Salzburg, with a motorhome stopover close to the centre.
- Day 6: Graz via the Semmering alpine road.
- Day 7: Lake Neusiedl, a cycling paradise, then back to Vienna.
Vignette and budget
The Austrian vignette is mandatory from the first motorway kilometre: about 12 € for 10 days for vehicles under 3.5 t, in digital form activated before departure. Above 3.5 t the GO box system applies — a good reason to stay with a campervan or a light semi-integrated. Weekly budget for two: 600-850 € rental, 130 € of fuel for 800 km, 25-40 € per campsite night, so 1,100-1,500 € excluding meals. Our fuel and tolls guide helps refine the numbers.
Overnight parking in Austria
Rules vary by federal state: overnighting outside campsites is forbidden in Tyrol and Vienna, and tolerated elsewhere for a single rest night outside protected areas. Campsites and official stopovers are plentiful and well kept. To start comparing, head to our motorhome rental in Vienna page — and run through the departure checklist before setting off.
