Germany’s second city, a legendary port, the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt: Hamburg already earns its stop. But above all it is the only big European city set between two seas — the North Sea and its mudflats to the west, the Baltic and its resorts to the east — with Denmark two hours up the road.

The Wadden Sea, the world’s largest tidal flats
West of the city begins the Wadden Sea, a World Heritage site: the largest system of mudflats and sandbanks on Earth, uncovered and re-covered twice a day by the tide. Seals, millions of migratory birds, guided walks across the flats (Wattwanderung): this is a coastline like no other. Its economic and emotional weight is documented: the study by Frans Sijtsma and colleagues published in 2012 in Ocean & Coastal Management — eloquently titled « Deep feelings around a shallow coast » — showed how the natural attractiveness of the Wadden region feeds local tourism employment while inspiring deep attachment in its visitors (Google Scholar page).
Three itineraries from Hamburg
- North Sea coast (3-4 days): the Schleswig-Holstein dykes, Husum, the Eiderstedt peninsula and the giant beach of Sankt Peter-Ording — tides and immense skies.

Good to know
South of the city, the Lüneburg Heath turns purple when the heather blooms, from August to mid-September — the perfect first-night escape.
