No country in Europe packs such a density of itineraries: Alpine lakes, the Dolomites, Tuscany, the Amalfi and Ligurian coasts, Puglia, two great islands — and an old camper culture served by thousands of aree di sosta. Italy is a country where the motorhome is at home; you just need to know the codes.
Where to rent: north, centre or south
Milan holds the country’s biggest fleet and opens onto Lakes Como and Maggiore, Lake Garda and the Langhe of Piedmont. Rome radiates towards the lakes of Latium and Tuscany; Naples launches you into the Cilento and the deep south of Puglia. Add Pisa for the Cinque Terre, Bologna for gourmet Emilia-Romagna and Venice for the Dolomites: every city in our Italy hub opens a different loop.
Aree di sosta: the network that changes everything
Italy invented its own stopover solution: thousands of municipal or private aires, often €10–20 a night with services, sometimes free off season. ZTL zones and tolls: the two Italian traps
Trap number one is the ZTL — zona a traffico limitato: historic centres are closed to unauthorised vehicles and camera-enforced, with an automatic fine each time you pass. Sicily and Sardinia: island Italy
The two great islands are campervan destinations in their own right: Sardinia via the Olbia ferry and Sicily between Etna and Taormina each deserve two weeks. Their visitor numbers remain heavily concentrated in summer: a study by Giovanni Ruggieri and Marco Platania published in 2024 in Sustainability analyses precisely the seasonality of Mediterranean island tourism and its summer imbalance (Google Scholar page) — by campervan, May, June, September and October are objectively the best months there. The season: anything but Ferragosto
Italy rents year-round — mild winters in the south, Christmas markets in the north — but mid-August (Ferragosto) saturates the entire coastline at once: the one week to avoid, or to spend in the mountains.
