In ten years Portugal has become southern Europe’s great campervan destination: 800 kilometres of Atlantic coast, a mild winter that draws motorhomers from across the continent, still-reasonable prices — and the country where Indie Campers was born. But success has tightened the rules: here is the honest state of play.
Where to rent: Lisbon, Porto or Faro

The founding itineraries
The backbone remains the Lisbon–Porto coast; the Alentejo offers the secret Portugal of wild beaches and white villages; the Douro valley unrolls its terraced vineyards from Porto. And Madeira, two hours away by air, rents locally in mini-campers for a volcanic extension.
Tolls: the electronic gantry trap
Several Portuguese motorways — including the Algarve’s A22 and the A25 — run on electronic tolling only: gantries photograph the plate, with no barriers and no cash lane. When renting, check that the vehicle carries a Via Verde transponder or equivalent, and how the rental company re-bills the charges — the question to ask before signing. Overnighting: the rule changed in 2021
The laissez-faire 2010s are over: since 2021 the Portuguese highway code strictly regulates overnighting in a motorhome outside authorised areas, with real enforcement on the sensitive coasts (the Costa Vicentina above all). The country’s answer: a fast-growing network of service aires (ASA) and municipal stopovers, plus plentiful, inexpensive campsites. Four seasons, two crowds
Summer belongs to holidaymakers, winter to the long-stayers: every year the Algarve hosts thousands of northern European motorhomers on extended stays. Sociologists João Filipe Marques and Teresa Isabel Rodrigues, in a 2024 study published in Tourist Studies based on Algarve fieldwork, distinguish three profiles of motorhome travellers — “enjoyers”, “seekers” and “vacationers” — with quite different expectations (Google Scholar page).
