Where to rent: Stockholm or Gothenburg
Two gateways share most of the rental supply. Allemansrätten: the right to roam, and its limit for campervans
Sweden’s right of public access lets anyone walk, forage and camp for a night or two on uncultivated land, away from dwellings. But as in Norway, it applies to campers on foot: the off-road driving act forbids any motor vehicle from leaving the road, and allemansrätten grants no right to park overnight. In practice Sweden remains very relaxed — nature car parks, lakeside pull-ins and a dense campsite network do the job. Driving the Swedish way: elk, plates and moderation
Three things to know. Elk collisions are a real risk at dawn and dusk, especially from May to September: slow down whenever forest lines the road. The urban congestion charges of Stockholm and Gothenburg are billed automatically to the plate — your rental company passes them on, as with the Öresund bridge toll if you arrive from Denmark via Copenhagen. And the drink-driving limit is near zero (0.2 g/l) while speed limits change constantly: Sweden is driven on cruise control, not against the clock.
A short season, long light
The campervan season runs from June to early September, with near-endless days around Midsummer, the unofficial national holiday when the whole country heads to its cabin — book that weekend very early. The further north you go towards Lapland, the more mosquitoes become a topic in July: pack nets and repellent.
