Campervan Hire in Stockholm: the Archipelago and the Roslagen Coast
Vaxholm, Värmdö, Roslagen and the right to roam: the campervan escape from Stockholm, between road-linked islands, swim spots and legal overnight stays.
People assume the Stockholm archipelago is off-limits to anyone on wheels; they forget that its finest stretches connect by road. Bridges and free cable ferries link Värmdö, Vaxholm and the Roslagen coast: an ideal playground for 3 to 5 campervan days, less than an hour from the Swedish capital.
The itinerary: east first, then north
Start with Värmdö and route 222: pink granite coves, falu-red cabins, swimming jetties. Push on to Stavsnäs, the end of the road facing the outer islands. Then head up to Vaxholm, the "capital of the archipelago", reached via route 274 and a short free cable ferry — its citadel and lanes are worth the half-day. Continue with the Roslagen to the north: Norrtälje, Grisslehamn, and kilometres of jagged coastline where every headland hides a swim spot. Total loop: 350 to 450 km, never rushed.
Allemansrätten: reasoned overnighting heaven
Sweden is the homeland of the right to roam: allemansrätten allows you to spend the night in open nature, away from dwellings, leaving no trace. In a campervan, the practical rule: the right covers nature, not parking — use the car parks and pitches where overnighting is not forbidden, plentiful outside urban areas. Swedish campsites (250-400 SEK, €22-36 a night) and the stopover network complete the offer. Details in our wild camping in Europe guide.
Budget and season
In Stockholm, a campervan rents for €90 to €170 per day in summer, a mini-camper for €55 to €100 — Scandinavia costs 20 to 30% more than southern Europe, but the free nights rebalance the budget. The mild season runs from late May to mid-September; June is magical (endless days, mosquitoes still discreet), August livelier with crayfish-party season. Four days for two: €550 to €900 all included.
Our tips
- The morning kanelbulle must be earned: village cafés open early and close early.
- Swim everywhere: the water reaches 18-20 °C in summer in sheltered coves — add the SUP option.
- Book the van 3 to 4 months ahead for July; the local fleet goes fast.
