Alsace in December is probably France's densest winter road trip: sometimes only twenty kilometres separate two Christmas markets, the half-timbered villages light up from late November, and the motorhome solves the saturated-hotels problem in one stroke. Strasbourg, "capital of Christmas" since 1570
The Christkindelsmärik of Strasbourg, documented since 1570, is France's oldest Christmas market: Place Broglie, the cathedral square and the great tree on Place Kléber, from late November to 24 December. The village route: Obernai, Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, Eguisheim
South of Strasbourg, the wine route becomes a route of lights: Obernai, then the string of Ribeauvillé–Riquewihr–Kaysersberg–Eguisheim, each with a market at village scale — craftspeople, mulled wine, bredele biscuits. Dedicated motorhome car parks fill by morning on December weekends: arrive early or aim for weekdays.
What the numbers say: tourism that counts
Christmas markets are not just a backdrop: tourism economists have made them a research subject. The work of Juan Gabriel Brida, Marta Disegna and Linda Osti on visitors to Alpine Christmas markets (Google Scholar page) shows that on-site spending varies sharply depending on whether visitors sleep nearby — the day-tripper spends noticeably less than the visitor who stays into the evening. That is precisely the motorhome's advantage: staying when the coaches leave, enjoying the lights after dark.
Winter logistics, without improvisation
December on the Alsace plain: frequent night frost, snow possible. The fundamentals of our winter RV guide apply: test the heating before departure, carry plenty of gas (consumption doubles in deep cold), manage water to avoid frozen lines, winter tyres — a legal requirement under France's "loi Montagne" if you push into the neighbouring Vosges. Part of the Alsatian campsite network stays open in December precisely for this clientele: book weekends ahead.
The smart move: low-season rental rates
December is a rental trough: outside school holidays, daily rates settle well below summer — that is the whole point of our off-season rental guide.
