The Ardennes by motorhome: the Benelux nature route

A 4–5 day motorhome road trip through the Belgian Ardennes: Dinant, the Semois valley, La Roche-en-Ardenne, Bastogne — cheap stopovers and the full budget.

Deep forests, looping rivers, castles on crags: the Belgian Ardennes are the Benelux's great nature escape, under two hours from Brussels or Antwerp. It is also one of Europe's most motorhome-friendly regions, with a network of low-cost municipal stopovers. Recommended itinerary over 4–5 days.

The itinerary: the valley loop

The whole loop is 400–500 km: short stages, time to walk.

The big asset: Wallonia's stopovers

Wallonia has invested heavily in motorhome stopovers: dozens of municipalities offer overnight parking, water and power for €0–15 a night, often riverside. It is the perfect place to learn how a stopover works if this is your first trip — our guide motorhome stopovers explained covers everything. Wild camping itself remains banned in Belgium: the country-by-country rules are in our guide.

Vehicle, season, budget

Decent but winding valley roads: any size works, a campervan or semi-integrated is the most pleasant. Expect €85–150 per day from Brussels or Antwerp depending on vehicle type. The season runs May to October; autumn, with the forests turning copper, is superb and prices drop. For a couple over five days: roughly €450–700 of rental, €30–60 of overnight fees, €90 of fuel — one of the cheapest quality road trips in Europe.
