A campervan is a rolling base camp — and it is often the added equipment that turns a mere journey into a proper holiday. Here is a tour of the most useful rental options, with observed prices and the traps to avoid.
The bike rack and bikes: the winning duo
The bike rack is the most requested option: €3 to €8 per day with professional fleets, often included with private owners. The bikes themselves rent for €8 to €15 per day (double for e-MTBs) — sometimes through the rental company, otherwise from a local shop at your stop. The right reflex: explore by bike what the van cannot reach, city centres and greenways first. Check the rack's maximum load (often 60 kg) if you bring e-bikes.
The inflatable SUP: €10 to €15 per day
An inflatable SUP stows in a garage locker and turns every lakeside stop into a playground. Expect €10 to €15 per day as an option, often with a softer weekly rate. On the alpine lakes around Annecy or the Swedish lakes, it is the extra that repays its few euros a day best.
The rooftop tent: two extra berths
On a mini-camper or compact van, a rooftop tent adds two berths for €15 to €25 per day — the cheapest way to travel as 4 without changing vehicle size (our mini-camper guide covers this setup). Two checks are essential: the total vehicle height with the tent folded (mind the 2 m car park barriers) and the company's explicit permission to sleep in it outside campsites, which depends on the country.
Awning, table, chairs and outdoor kitchen
The "terrace" kit (awning, table, chairs) runs €3 to €6 per day or comes free — insist on it in summer, it doubles your living space. An outdoor shower and a portable barbecue complete the picture for a few euros.
