Down payment, balance, security deposit: how an RV rental gets paid

30% at booking, balance before departure, security deposit at key handover: the payment circuit of a campervan rental, and the protections that come with it.

Paying for a motorhome rental resembles neither a hotel nor a regular rental car: three moments, three amounts, three logics. Understanding them avoids frights — and maxed-out card limits on departure day.

The standard circuit

At booking: a down payment of 30-50% (secure online payment through the platform — never a direct bank transfer). Before departure: the balance, usually due between 30 days and a few days before key handover. At key handover: the security deposit, blocked but not charged — 1,000 to 2,500 € depending on the vehicle and insurance option.

The bank-card point

The deposit usually works by pre-authorisation: 2,000 € blocked on an immediate-debit card can saturate a weekly limit. Before departure: check your ceiling, warn your bank if needed, or look at the deposit-waiver options some platforms sell. A credit card with a high ceiling — rather than a debit card — remains the simplest answer, and it is worth arranging a week ahead rather than at the counter. The full picture is in our deposit and insurance guide.

What the platform protects

Paying inside the platform's circuit (Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer, Indie Campers) triggers its protections: insurance included for the rental period, refunds according to the displayed cancellation policy, mediation in a dispute, recourse if the vehicle does not match the listing. A hand-to-hand down payment to "avoid the fees" loses all of that — the classic mistake, and the natural hunting ground of scams.

Cancellation: read the line BEFORE

Every offer displays its policy: "flexible" (refund until 15 or 30 days out), "moderate", "strict" (down payment lost). At equal price, flexibility is the tie-breaker; for a road trip booked six months ahead it becomes criterion number one. Van-Comparator displays the cancellation policy whenever the platform publishes it — and our guide to rental prices details every extra fee to anticipate.
