Around Madrid by campervan: Segovia, Ávila and the Sierra de Guadarrama

Rent a campervan in Madrid for 3-4 days in Castile: Segovia’s aqueduct, Ávila’s walls, the Guadarrama passes — stages, altitude and budget.

Nobody thinks of Madrid for a campervan road trip. A mistake: within ninety minutes of the capital, Castile lines up two UNESCO-listed cities, a 2,400-metre sierra and golden plateaus straight out of a western. Three to four days will do it.

The itinerary

Leave Madrid to the north-west towards El Escorial and its outsized monastery-palace. Cross the Sierra de Guadarrama over the Navacerrada pass (1,858 m): pine forests, raptors and welcome coolness in summer. On the far side, Segovia: the 28-metre Roman aqueduct, the fairytale alcázar, and roast suckling pig as the local institution. Close the loop with Ávila, ringed by 2.5 kilometres of intact medieval walls — spectacular at sunset from the Cuatro Postes viewpoint. With a fifth day, push on to Toledo, ninety minutes south — a third UNESCO city and a different Spain again.

Parking and sleeping

As everywhere in Spain, sleeping kerbside is risky: Segovia and Ávila have tolerant stopovers and car parks on their edges (free to €10), and the sierra has several year-round campsites. Nights are guaranteed cool above 1,000 metres, even in July — the supplied bedding is no luxury, and diesel heating earns its keep from October onwards.

Which van, what budget

A compact campervan or converted van (€75-160/day): the historic centres are walked from the outer car parks. Four days from Madrid: €300-560 rental, €60 of fuel, €20-40 of overnight fees. Before setting off, our departure checklist catches the classic oversights.

Insider tip

Avoid July-August on the plateaus (a furnace at noon) and aim for May-June or September-October. In winter the sierra turns white: Segovia under snow, the aqueduct frosted — one of Spain’s great images, though chains are sometimes required on the pass.
