Monasteries perched on 300 m sandstone towers, balcony roads winding between the rocks: Meteora ranks among the most astonishing landscapes in Europe. Good news for motorhome travellers: the site is perfectly suited to vehicle-based travel, with campsites at the very foot of the rocks.
Getting there
Meteora sits above Kalambaka, in Thessaly: 2 h by road from Thessaloniki, 4 h from Athens via the E75 then the E92 (allow 20-30 € in gantry tolls from Athens). Access roads are wide; the panoramic loop between the monasteries is easy in a campervan or semi-integrated, with plenty of laid-out viewpoints.
Where to sleep: Kastraki and Kalambaka
- Camping Vrachos in Kastraki: the reference, directly beneath the rocks, pool, 25-35 € per night for two.
- Camping The Cave in Kastraki: smaller, superb view.
- Several grounds along the Trikala road for high-season evenings.
Overnighting outside campsites is illegal in Greece, and the monastery car parks are closed to overnight stays: no point trying, the local campsites are excellent and cheap.
Visiting the monasteries
Six monasteries are open to visitors, each with its own weekly closing day — check the calendar so you do not find a locked door. Entry: a few euros per person per monastery. Dress code enforced: covered shoulders everywhere, long skirts for women (wraps are lent at the entrance). Great Meteoron and Varlaam are the most imposing, Roussanou the most photogenic. Arrive before 9.30 am or after 3 pm to dodge the coaches, and keep your evening for sunset from the Psaropetra viewpoint.
Fitting it into a road trip
Meteora slots naturally between Thessaloniki and the Peloponnese, or into a northern loop with Mount Olympus and the Pindus range. Two nights on site are enough for three or four monasteries and a walk among the rocks.
