The right season: May–June, no contest
Late May and June bring endless days (sunset after 10pm), quiet roads and — crucially — fewer midges, the tiny biting flies that ruin still summer evenings in the Highlands from July onwards. September is the other good window. In peak August, book your campsites, especially on the west coast.
