Campervan rental in Los Angeles

Los Angeles (Californie) is one of the great RV rental bases of the United States, where vehicles run bigger than in Europe and one-way trips are common. Van-Comparator compares the platforms in a single search and ranks the offers by real price.

The campervan — VW California, Mercedes Marco Polo, Ford Transit Nugget — is the ultimate freedom format in Los Angeles: it drives like a large car, parks in town, yet hides a bed, a kitchenette and often a pop-top roof. It is the most contested segment of the market, split between private owners and professional fleets — the one where comparing platforms pays most.

Expect €75–150 per day depending on season, model and included mileage. All these vans stay under 3.5 t: a standard car licence is enough across Europe (in the US and Canada, your regular licence works — an International Driving Permit is recommended for European visitors). Check each offer's deposit, excess and mileage cap — the three items that vary most between platforms.

By campervan out of Los Angeles: routes and stopovers

From Los Angeles, the obvious route runs up the Pacific Coast Highway: Malibu and its beaches, then Santa Barbara at the two-hour mark, before Highway 1 continues towards Big Sur for the following stages. In the opposite direction, Joshua Tree national park and its boulder-strewn desert are two and a half hours away, with Palm Springs en route. And barely an hour out, the Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2) climbs past 2,000 m into the San Gabriel mountains, above the smog.

Sleeping on the street is banned in Los Angeles, Malibu and Santa Monica alike: nights are spent in campgrounds. Coastal state park and national park sites are booked on ReserveCalifornia and recreation.gov — allow several weeks, sometimes months, of lead time for anything on the coast. Around Joshua Tree, federal BLM land offers free dispersed camping. Season-wise, the desert is for October to April — summer out there is genuinely dangerous — while on the coast the “June gloom” often shrouds early-summer mornings.

When to go from Los Angeles
