Campervan rental in Faro

Faro (Algarve) is an ideal gateway to Portuguese vanlife, between the Atlantic coast and the hinterland. Van-Comparator compares the platforms in one search to find the right vehicle at the best price.

The campervan — VW California, Mercedes Marco Polo, Ford Transit Nugget — is the ultimate freedom format in Faro: it drives like a large car, parks in town, yet hides a bed, a kitchenette and often a pop-top roof. It is the most contested segment of the market, split between private owners and professional fleets — the one where comparing platforms pays most.

Expect €75–150 per day depending on season, model and included mileage. All these vans stay under 3.5 t: a standard car licence is enough across Europe (in the US and Canada, your regular licence works — an International Driving Permit is recommended for European visitors). Check each offer's deposit, excess and mileage cap — the three items that vary most between platforms.

By campervan out of Faro: routes and stopovers

Faro puts the whole Algarve within ninety minutes. Eastwards lie the Ria Formosa lagoon and the villages of Tavira and Cacela Velha, with deserted sandbars reachable at low tide. To the west, Lagos and the Ponta da Piedade, then Sagres and Cape St Vincent — a wind-blasted end of the world — at an hour and a quarter. From there the N268 runs up the Costa Vicentina, a protected wild coast, while the Serra de Monchique tops out at Fóia an hour's drive away, with views over both shores.

The Algarve is where Portugal's ban on vehicle wild camping is enforced most strictly, including regular patrols along the Costa Vicentina: sleep at campsites or ASAs, of which there are plenty along the whole coast. A local quirk: van high season here is winter — thousands of European overwinterers fill the aires from December to February, so arrive early in the afternoon to secure a spot. Spring, with flowering clifftops and quiet car parks, is the perfect moment.

When to go from Faro
