The A7 drops down the Rhône valley past Vienne and the Côte-Rôtie vineyards, while the A43 puts the pre-Alps — the Chartreuse and the Bauges massif — about an hour away. One thing to know before setting off: the Lyon low-emission zone applies 24/7, to parking as well as driving, and bans Crit’Air 3 and above. Lyon runs a low-emission zone requiring a Crit’Air sticker: park on the edge of the city and take public transport in. The villages of the Beaujolais and the Dombes keep small municipal aires, often free, and the winegrowers of the France Passion network make ideal stopovers between Villefranche-sur-Saône and Mâcon. The contrast with the metro area is sharp: of the 14 named aires within 30 km of Lyon, 11 are free and only 2 paid, but median capacity drops to 5 pitches and just 3 of 7 offer electricity. In other words, many very small village aires and a single large equipped site, at Villefranche-sur-Saône. These counts only cover fields actually documented by OpenStreetMap contributors.
Driving a mini-camper in Lyon: size, parking, restrictions
The Fourvière tunnel jams at rush hour and on big getaway weekends: bypass it via the eastern ring road. The Presqu’île and Vieux Lyon are too tight to park a campervan — the metro park-and-ride lots do the job perfectly, and the roads of the Beaujolais and the Monts du Lyonnais stay wide and easy. The low-emission zone is worth understanding rather than fearing. Contrary to what is often written, it has not been abolished: the article repealing it was struck down by the Constitutional Council on 21 May 2026 as an unrelated rider, so the scheme remains in force. But it stops at Crit’Air 3, whereas a rental motorhome or van, a Euro 6 diesel, is rated Crit’Air 2: it can enter and park freely. The issue only becomes real for an older second-hand vehicle.
